Supporters Direct (new)sport wales

In the UK Spectator Sport of all kinds was once owned by its fans. Where business people were involved it was often out of a desire to return something to the community, and most people reckoned that a town football club was a money pit   from which investors would never get a return.

In 1900 a maximum wage of £4 per week was set by the FA to limit the “horse trading” of players by clubs and keep excessive commercialism out of the sport. The lifting of the maximum wage for players in 1961 was a pivotal moment in the history of professional football in this country. The campaign that preceded it caught the imagination of people in a way that no other such football battle had before, or has since, with a great deal of the attention centring on Jimmy Hill, the successor to Jimmy Guthrie as the Professional Footballers Association Chairman.

With the increased television coverage that had started in 1938 and increased steadily from then on, football became more and more commercial. From the first formal deal in 1960 the price of the TV contracts rose to £2.6m per year in 1983 and to £11m per year by 1988. The price today is close to £1bn.

Slowly ownership of football has been moved to the private sector and today has become in many cases a vehicle not for community benefit but for private land value speculation. Stadia that had been built at the edge of town after the First World War were slowly surrounded by new developments and became prime real estate, and TV rights now account for far more income than gate receipts.

Many sports grounds have been, and are still being turned into shopping malls with a sports stadium attached. Many clubs are now so focussed on TV rights they have forgotten the fans who turn out week after week to support them.

The grass roots movement, led by Supporters Direct has reversed this process.

Football is not unique in this drift to private ownership and commercialisation. Other spectator sports have followed suit, with increasing corporatisation in both codes of Rugby Football.

Now, Spectator Sport is returning to its roots and the pace of change is accelerating.

European Mutual Statute comes a step closer

On March 14th  the European Parliament in Strasbourg unanimously adopted a report by MEP Luigi Berlinguer (S&D) on a European Mutual Statute.

This comes after a campaign undertaken by the Association Internationale de la Mutualité (AIM), which was supported by leading UK mutual Benenden Health.

This outcome means that MEPs have therefore expressed their overwhelming support in favour of recommendations made by the members of the Committee on Legal Affairs and the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament, which requested support from the European commission for a European Mutual Statute (EMS). Northern Ireland hears the case for water mutuals

Co-operatives and Mutuals Wales arranged for Nigel Annett, Managing Director of Glas Cymru to travel to the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont on a visit hosted by the Northern Ireland Co-operative Forum on February 27th this year to address both the All Party Group on Co-operatives and Mutuals and the Committee for Regional Development. This is as a result of the work we have done as secretariat of the Welsh Assembly’s Cross Party Group over the last two years bringing the All Party Groups in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland closer together.

We reproduce below the article by Paul Gosling first published in Co-operative News

Stormont members consider Welsh model for water management – while in England companies continue their profiteering

Stormont visit

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE … Simon Hamilton MLA with Nigel Annett, Managing Director of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water; Jo Aston from the Utility Regulator and Steven Agney MLA, Green Party leader in Northern Ireland and Chair of the All Party Group on Co-operatives and Mutuals, outside Stormont Castle

ENGLISH water companies are generating hundreds of millions of pounds in operating profits, yet some of the largest are avoiding paying corporation tax, according to an investigation by the Observer. One tax avoidance device used is to borrow money at high interest rates from subsidiaries based in offshore tax havens and to claim the interest costs as a tax-deductible expense. Continue reading

www.shares.coop launches

consultancy.coop, a worker co-operative of third sector consultants which is a member of Co-operatives and Mutuals Wales and Co-operatives UK has launched a brand new service aimed at organisations that are raising investment funds through a Community Shares Issue

www.shares.coop

This is becoming an increasingly popular way to raise funds directly from the public, bypassing the tortuous process of grant and loan applications, and providing a direct democratic link to the individual investors.

The website is described by them as “A window shopping site – we don’t actually sell shares, but we enable people who want to invest to find what’s on offer and go directly there.
“There are many Community share issues that get publicity locally, but are to find out a bout if you’re not in the immediate area”.

consultancy.coop are proud to have got this initiative off the ground in Wales, and it is entirely self funding – in the spirit of co-operative community shares themselves.

To see what’s on offer, go to the site:- www.shares.coop

For further details on the consultancy.coop go to :- www.consultancy.coop

Generation Community share offer for project in Newport

Generation Community is a new community cooperative registered with the FSA, pushing the boundaries in Co-operative finance. Gen Community are launching projects (PV, wind, and renewable heating) in the £1 – £2 million range, and are not geographically tied to one specific area of the UK. Gen Community is appealling to the ‘low carbon community’ nationally to finance installations in areas which typically exhibit good locations for installations, such as south Wales, but lack the capital to proceed. Gen Community’s aim is to empower the wider ‘low carbon community’ to aid the roll out of low carbon technologies across the UK. Continue reading
