Business Support

The Co-operative Enterprise hub runs a programme to provide business support to new and existing co-operatives across the UK. The Advice and Training programme enables co-operative enterprises to access expert support to develop a sustainable and successful co-operative business.

Co-operative enterprises can apply for up to four days support which includes business planning, financial, staffing, legal and governance advice, as well as small grants and access to the Co-operative Loan fund.

The programme is delivered at a regional level and is currently operating in the North West, South East, South West and East of England. Wales joined the programme in January 2010. The programme in Wales is operated by a partnership between the Wales Co-operative Centre and consultancy.coop

Grants

The Co-operative Enterprise hub also has a programme of larger grants for co-operative enterprises that have identified a co-operative solution to tackle climate change. We are looking for practical applications in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

Therefore your project must:

  • Be a new start or that the proposal will lead to a considerable expansion of activity
  • Be in the area of renewable technology or energy efficiency
  • Include the establishment of a business to sell, develop or exploit these technologies on a co-operative basis
  • Install renewable energy/energy efficiency equipment
  • Not be to support feasibility studies or research projects

Loans

The Co-operative Loan Fund aims to strengthen the size and scope of the co-operative sector through the provision of ethical, accessible loan finance.

It exclusively lends to co-ops, and is entirely funded and run by co-ops, so unlike many conventional lenders it truly understands and actively supports democratically owned and controlled enterprises. It also reinvests its surpluses to continue its support.

Loan applications are welcome from new and existing co-operatives that need between £5,000 – £75,000 of loan finance to:

• Set up as a new co-operative
• Expand their size and scope
• Assist an employee buyout or company succession
• Purchase a property or business
• Purchase capital equipment or create working capital
